Actually the lead came would make this conversation irrelevant...because it would give the piece the support that it needs...it might need to be a very narrow piece of lead..

De

I beg to differ. Lead came won't make that joint between the neck and the body any stronger. It may help keep it from pilling apart, but  it won't stiffen the joint, which is what's required.

I was thinking of tacking the restrip in place, then covering it with lead for appearance.

LOL Anne, yes really.  I'm suddenly glad that I've never made a flamingo for my lawn. LOL   I have to admit, and this is just my feeling..I probably wouldn't have used restrip around the edge of this..I'd have either used wire and solder or outlined it with lead...the neck, not such a great design...Nancy's suggestion of the clear glass support pieces would help it greatly and I really do like that idea.
At this point, I feel for poor Lou Ann, I'd have probably thrown it away by now..no patience me.

I do too!  I admire you for persevering Lou Ann. By this point I think I'd have found something else to give the friend.

LoL...I really think it's neat that she's seeing this through. What a learning curve huh LA! There's so many ways to reach the end goal. I would have never thought about using restrip as a stiffener! I can see Graham's idea in this. You can fold the wide surface to itself easily, but no way can you fold it the other way! That would really stiffen things up.

Graham - ''Timing is important. Hang around one second too long, the bead disappears and it's back to square one.''

That's what you were having problems with, right Lou Ann? Looking forward to hearing how you were able to deal with your poor birdie - may she live happly ever after:) grin

You have all hit the nail on the head with the hammer -- I have wanted to throw this piece against the wall more than once; however, it could be paid for if I just get it done and no the money isn't worth the time I've gotten into it but it has been a learning experience of:

1. how not to design cute things for the garden -- stick with sturdy things for the garden

2. how to not work with restrip -- it works better on the inside between pieces -- should have learned this on Lady Helen's guitar that is still upstairs waiting to be finished

3. and the most important lesson -- say "NO"

the second one is a repair of the one that sold last summer and I am going to use the braided reinforcing on that and tell her to bring  it in next winter.

and all of those who have called me patient, you are so wrong, I am the least patient person to walk the face of the earth... just ask Toni
