Kev, I liked the original at the cold worked stage. It was am awesome sandhill crane to me. I am glad to hear you sand blasted off the paint. I can see where some very simple lines to cover the less than perfect fusing joints could come in handy, but retaining as much of the simplicity as possible. Great first concept!

Good eye Judy. That was the vision I had as well. I too liked the original pattern. I only wish I had cut it better so the fusing joints would have been tighter.

I am finally getting back to this piece. I decided to add frit to add some texture and touch up the joints. I will do a contour fuse so some of the texture remains. The tan frit is coarser, so should have more texture than the black. If all goes well, it will then be slumped into a mold.

Very nice!
The Sandhill Cranes left last Saturday by the thousands. I love the noise they fill the air with when they fly over. A truly special species!!!!!!!!!

The texture pretty much disappeared, and a bit of the beige melted into the black along the edge..so once again looks like crap.
Since I consider it a write off already...I have nothing to lose, so I might try some carving on the piece.

Kev, it only looks like crap to you because you know what you had planned and you want it perfect. The rest of us probably wouldn't even notice if you didn't point it out to us.

I just noticed your signature line. Is that a message for Judy and me? I don't think either of us danced and we both got wet!

Kev, is it possible to use a little black paint over the beige that melted over the black? I don't think anyone would notice but you. Nice piece by the way, I like it very much.

I didn't notice until you pointed it out, and even seeing it don't think it detracts from the look of the piece. Do you want beauty or perfection? You can have the first without the second.

I want it all... Linde...I probably could and might end up doing just that...but I'm kind of thinking now of doing a lot of sand carving to the piece.

sand carving would probably be nice Kev but at what point do you say ok I've done enough to this piece. I know this is a prototype but you don't want to have SO much time into the piece that it makes it price prohibitive. Why don't you put the palm tree in and see how you like it - obviously the palm tree is an integral part of the piece.

There is no palm tree planned for this piece. That's planned for the photo frame. The carving is need in that piece to write the recipients names in the sand.
I only continue on with the crane piece because otherwise it's garbage, so nothing ventured, nothing gained and if it gets totally screwed up, it's no big loss. I won't be making it again.

Oh yeah, my mistake. I have palm trees on the brain waiting to see how that one comes out! You won't make it again? That's a drag, you put a lot of time into it and it's a classy piece!

I agree it is a very classy design. I agree with Linde, a few well placed black lines added to the design and you would never see the fuse wobbles in the lines. Remember, less is more. Especially in a design like this.

Here is today's progress with this piece...the finale.
I added some paint to it. I decided to let every preconceived idea go and just have some fun with it as I had nothing to lose. The line work is not perfect, as I really suck at it (hand shakes too much..not relaxed enough I guess...lol), I tried to work with what I could do. I splattered paint on it and love the effect on the white glass. The graphic is F.P.G (Focal Point Glassworks) made to look a little oriental in design and not so obvious that it's FPG. I love the look of the sun! Over all I'm beginning to really like it now. The proof will be when it's taken out of the kiln.
