I was thinking that as well. Clamp your cutter into a vise.

Just to say that we took photos and I tried to post a tutorial on our method of bottle cutting before we left - but the internet gremlins ate it.......!!! However - the cutter in Wayne's post is exactly the one we use - except that we had never thought to use it lying down like that!! Wonderfull idea!!! Will get to re-posting our pics soon - just got back from the (first!) wedding - as Ian uses a slightly different version of the hot/cold water for breaking, which also works really well.

After NUMEROUS computer/server/whatever problems, I'm going to try for a third time to post the pictures of our bottle cutting method!!! As you can see - it's the same device as the one in Wayne's link - but we have always used it with the bottle upright - though plan to try it as per the video, which might be easier for me to get a decent score! It's all pretty self-explanetory until the score is made - Then Ian's secret is to insert the funnel with tubing attached and pour previously boiled and slightly cooled water into the bottle so that it does'nt touch the sides of the bottle, but just fills from the bottom up to JUST above the score line. Then he uses the spray bottle set onto a 'solid' stream spray (not the misty one) with cold water, lifts the bottle just off the sink and sprays directly on the score line, rotating the bottle, which then generally breaks pretty cleanly by at least the second rotation......
Everyone has their own version of the hot/cold water thing - but this works for Ian!! Hope it helps some of you too!

Part of my problem is not using a funnel. I will have to try again WITH a funnel. I don't think I am getting the best score, either.

Ja, Rebecca, I KNOW that getting the score right is a large part of my trouble too! - which is why the ' lying down' bottle as per Wayne's post might work better for me. I don't seem to be able to rotate the bottle and hold the cutter in place properly. Small hands can be a curse! Let us know how you fare!!
