Well, my specially ordered Hakko has duly arrived! Having been told that it did'nt come with a tip - I ordered the required chisel tip at the same time. On arrival, I find that it came with a pencil point tip in it (which is nice to have for getting into whirls..) and the chisel tip seperate. Um! so how do I change the tip, please...someone?? My previous irons have all had the lilltle screws that seize up or generally disintegrate trapping corroding the tip before the iron burns out...... I'm guessing you have to unscrew the large 'nut' on the bottom above the handle, - but just wanted to make sure before I force anything!! This has cost (Ian) an arm and a leg - so don't want to mess it up before I even get to use it!! Thank you in advance!!

What model do you have? My 456 came with the chisel tip, and I have never bothered to change it, but I noticed it is now loose and I have to tighten it before using it next time.

You are correct, Beth. The big nut at the base of the handle is loosened and the whole piece, including the nut, slips off. Then you can switch tips.

Thanks, Rebecca - just needed to be sure!! It's a model 456 Yvonne, and the chisel tip is A1026 shape 5D. I'm guessing that your USA stained glass suppliers stock them with the chisel tip. SG suppliers here don't stock them at all - too expensive - so I ordered mine from the S.A. Hakko agent who knows nothing about stained glass as they are suppliers to the industrial trade generally. This is why I had to do my own research and supply him with all the 'part' numbers and he just ordered for me. It actually arrived a lot sooner than I had expected! Perhaps you could contact the U.K. Hakko agent and see where that takes you Yvonne?? But as I said - it did'nt come cheap!! sincerely hoping it will outlast me!!

I used a small shifting spanner to unscrew mine as it was too tight for my fingers - maybe you could tighten yours in the same way - it just needs about a quarter turn to make it firm! I know it's early days yet, but so far I'm loving mine! It's even lighter than the Leppinit, and I find it very well balanced and comfortable to use! Thanks again for everyone's help in leading to this decision to go for it! "Because I'm worth it!" as they say in all the best adverts!

I wouldn't have anything but my hakko 456; it is going on 5 years old and I just now replaced the tip and that was only because of something stupid I did that caused the one that came with it to need replacing -- my mom bought her first replacement tip the same time I did and her iron is closer to 10 yrs old (she only bought it to have on had in case, I didn't share with her what I did to mine so she probably won't need to change it anytime soon) Lou Ann

I just saw it listed on E-Bay for $56.00 and at doge Studio for $51.00. Gee...from all the talk I thought they were really expensive. http://www.dodgestudio.com/Hakko.htmIs this the one everyone is talking about?

check the shipping to your location, I just did and the same tip would have cost me $3 more than the one I bought because the shipping to TN was over $11

I wasnt thinking of just a tip, tips are something to have on hand and I always pick up a spare whenever I break out a new one. In the case of a Hakko at these prices it would be worth ordering two. Not all of us have wholesale or a close store, I miss having glassers nearby, in Florida we would get together a shared order and buy bulk. Why pay over12 bucks for solder when you can get it for $-9 if you order enough?

Gee...from all the talk I thought they were really expensive. http://www.dodgestudio.com/Hakko.htmIs this the one everyone is talking about? Yup! that's the one. But for me in S.A. it was a bit more expensive. Because of our electricity differences (we use 220v) I could'nt get one from the USA. Don't know where mine come from, they said 5-6 weeks delivery time, but it was here in 2 1/2weeks - but the actual iron cost R725, - the chisel tip R230, postage R45 and then 14% tax (VAT) on top of all that = R1,140.92 = about $150. For me, that is quite expensive!! The last Lepponitt I got was about R150.

Wow 30 bucks for a tip, they are the same as what we use aren't they? Weller 100 runs the same in Australia over U$200, and they are made there!
