Easy Project with a bit of Pizazz!

I picked up a few textured fusing molds a couple of weeks ago. I thought they would be cool to have when I needed to do a quick, easy project.  This was my first go with the smallest of the molds, only about 6.5"x 6.5", using red irid. I was impressed!  Very easy to use, the texture turned out very well and the colors in the irid just pop.  For a no fuss project with a bit of pizazz I'd recommend textured molds!

That's very pretty!  It reminds me of Carnival glass I think.  For a collector that would be a wonderful addition!

Nancy, here's a link to the mold I used for this little dish. It's a bit bigger than stated in the description but only big enough to fit 6" x 6" glass on it. There are other patterns that are larger.

I'd like to be able to take credit for the whole project but all I did was run it through the kiln a couple of times!  The design was done for me in the mold and the glass was cool when I bought it...or as cool as irid can be before it's fired. I just think that something like this is great when you need a piece in a pinch and don't have the time to carve fiber board or fiber paper.  It's kind of a "no brainer" that sometimes we all need!

Marsha, it is a great piece of glass and, as with most irid, looks different in different light.  The first pic was taken with direct, bright light...I was hoping the various colors of the irid coating would show and they did. This pic was taken in low light and looks totally different.  I'm not a big irid or dichro fan but for these molds the use of irid makes them reall pop.

Thanks for the link Becki. I had a look in my catalogue last night and saw something called 'Tile Mold' that I thought might be the same idea as you used.  Another idea for making textures that I have is some lava cloth, but haven't tried it out yet.

Is your plate a single layer or does it have a clear cap? I'm thinking that if it's 2 layers, you wouldn't be able to feel the texture provided by the mold as much?

It's 2 layers...the red irid face down on the mold and a piece of clear. Because it's taken to full fuse 1 layer would probably pull in and "dogbone".

Lava cloth is another way to achieve texture.  Just make sure you pre-shrink it first.

Hmmm! A piece of ceramic board with a stencil cut out, stuck to it and the pattern  sandblasted into the board. Endless possibilities
