I have started a new project.  This is my first time for drawing a panel pattern and I will be changing and editing as I go.  I'm keeping the camera near to take pictures as I go.  So here's the first stages of the project.  The first two pictures are the model and the pattern and I'm using a square to make sure my frame will be straight.

the next pictures are some of the glass choices and pattern layout on the glass.  I have a saw so I will be using it alot with this project.  As of now, I haven't decided if I will cut all the pieces for the face, or do a foil overlay for the nose and mouth.  Again, I kind of design and modify as I go.
I am writing the glass code (if I know it) on the pattern just in case.....don't want another Giraffe episode...

Here's the latest progress.  I've cut the body, haven't decided on the face yet, so just added sharpie on it, cut some of the mulch and picked the background shrub glass.  This glass is where the saw comes in very handy, its heavy texture and does not break evenly.  I'm going to leave the bottom edge exactly as it is just for additional interest.  Foiling will be fun and cutting the mulch to fit will be a challenge, but I'm going to give it a stab.

Thank you all for the nice comments, I'm excited to be doing this and learning as I go for the design flow and cut lines.  I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous...lol

well hello cousin Lady Helen....lol

I don't know what 'm going to do with this, I just loved this picture and thought it would make a neat panel, I'm calling it Momma's Hostas/Toby's Throne.  I may give it as a gift to my friend and just ask that she lets me take it to the craft shows for display purposes.

Here's what I decided to do for the face, its my version of foil overlay.  I split my thinnest foil, then lay it on top of the lines, burnish, then trim with an exato knife.  Once all the lines are done, I foil the edge and then trim the excess foil overlay from the back.  Don't know if this is the technique or materials that everyone else uses, so if you do something else, please don't hesitate to post pictures and comments.

I foil and solder as I go, so here's the top background and face and body done.  While soldering the face, I decided that two additional lines needed to be added to add dimension/shadowing.

that's really looking nice... I like the way you did the overlay... I have an "attack cat" to do for my MIL and I might use your technique for the nose area...

I want to say it Wassmach (sp?)- but I'm not sure.  I've used it in a golf panel to represent the forrest and in another panel for pine trees.  I'll have to ask Mike at the glass shop, he ordered it for me.  I love the look, but it is a bear to work with, it chips and slivers and I only use a saw to cut.  I tried just scoring a straight line for the side edge (score on the back) and it chipped on me, so back to the saw.

Parts of the face may lift from the glass.  If it does, just put a little glue behind it when it is finished.

Rebecca, You are absolutely right, the mouth already lifted off, so I've painted a mouth - its drying.  If the rest moves or lifts off, I'll glue.  Thanks for the tip.

When you solder the glue on the foil melts and the foil will often float right off the glass.  Be VERY careful not to solder over the overlays too much, the glass underneath is prone to heat cracks.  That's why if there is a large area of foil overlay it is recommended to solder off of the project, then glue to the project or just tack at the edges to the project.
