my grandson broke a stained glass night light and I was asked to repair it.
First let me say I said I would not, but would make him one with lead free solder., because he is only 3 and shouldn't be handling lead stuff as his hand still go in him mouth.
But I am curious about this night light. The lead looks as though it was fired/fused, into the glass rather than it being foil or came. it is rounded on the front and flat on the back. As you can see it is rather wide to narrow around the pedals. The piece was soldered onto the night light clip, that is what broke. There is glitter in the glass also.
I thought that maybe I could solder a hanger on the back and make a sun catcher for his father to hang in the window for him, but the metal doesn't seem to want to metal

no it is definately glass, I had my stepson use a glass cutter on it cause my first thought was that it was plastic, and it is some sort of metal for sure. It weighs a ton

I would drill a hole but have you tried sanding the area you want to solder? I have to say it looks like the bake in the oven plastic stuff.

It looks more like it's cast, rather than soldered. What metal? Who knows? But it ain't lead, if you can't solder it.
I don't see where the fitting was previously "soldered" You sure it wasn't glued? There's an epoxy glue that's silver coloured. Whatever, it's that silver coloured (or ordinary) epoxy that I'd use. It doesn't look like something that will ever be examined by the guys at Sothebey's. And cute as it might be, it's not worth much repair effort.

You know in the time it has taken everyone to type a response, you could have made a similar item out of glass? You, of course, would have to hang the thing out of the reach of the child's hands though.

Since I'm the crusty Nana in our family, I'd probably say..he's 3, I'll make him a train nightlight and he'll forget about the flower, then I'd save it in a box and use it to embarrass him in high school. But that's cause I'm a little weird

Tre, you are not weird. When my grandson decided tearfully to give up his Barney blanket which he wasn't without for years and put it in my trash can, I quickly retrieved it to give him on his wedding day. I've teased him about it a couple times (he is 17 now) over the years, but he doesn't believe I really have it.

How sweet is that! I saved my daughters scrap of a blanket. The survivor piece is about 6" square. She keeps it wrapped up in acid free paper in her Memory Box...she'll be 30 this summer...
