but............my take on this is you have to have a lot of artist in you to generate this quality. You see things I don't Kev. I tried painting a bit but I don't believe I have the eye to bring all of it together. I really like watching you make these panels come together though!!

In the class that Judy and I took, Dick Millard said that the paint you used to get needed to be ground but now the Reusche is so finely milled that he just uses the palette knife as Malinda described.

Ah...that makes sense. I guess that's why I never bought one. I never found it to be that lumpy.

This is looking great Kev. I do it much the way you describe. My easel looks just like yours and my brushes are in the old colored aluminum cups from the 50's.
I tape paper to the bottom of my easel to catch the paint dust and then return it to my pallet for remixing.
Why are you working areas and not putting a matt over the whole piece and working it all at once? Won't you be using some of those same browns in your tree shadows to tie the piece together?
You did a good job explaining things!

Hi Judy, hope you enjoying your trip.
I will not be using the same colors in the tress, water, or white areas of the bird, therefore I have to do those first. I will be using black for the remainder of the piece, so have to finish up the browns first.

The trip ............. well it could have gone better. I have been real, real sick. Feel like I just woke yesterday afternoon from a rip van winkle time warp. Injured my eardrums so can't fly home Friday like planned. .................... Hey , is that sunshine out my window ........... maybe it will be okay to be stuck here a little longer Just a thought on your painting plan. What you are doing will work because the black will unite the piece. But if you were doing an oil or even some watercolors you can do an under painting of all the same color, browns or blues, then you build up the rest of the painting on top of that. That way the painting has like a photo negetive of hues and values that are all in the same ranges. It ties the work together. So when I do a painting on glass, and granted I too am still learning everytime I touch the stuff, I do a total wash and that way have the same brown shades showing up all over the work, so that nothing seems to sit like a glued additive to the piece. The browns in your bird will also be reflected in the water below him, under his neck, and could easily be seen in little bits of the shadows of the trees. The blacks and/or blues in the tree shadows can also be seen in the under shadows in his wings, and tiny ripple parts in the water. Blues and purples make exciting shadow colors. His tail being turned brown is not a problem. Turn it into the tip of his back wing. This is coming along so nice.

Today's progress.....
A black matt was applied over the entire piece, and then worked. Another heavier black matt will still be applied to the woods area, and worked again.
The first pic is what it looked like coming out of the kiln this morning. It's currently in there again after today's work on it.
