Kev, if you blacken the top beak where it touchs the bottom beak, it may look like his mouth is open a wee bit and that would reduce the size for you, if that is what you are worried about.

No that's not really that Joan. I should have cut the glass a bit differently for the beak, but...it is what it is at this point. I could outline everything, but I'm thinking outlining the bird would not make it blend into the scene as well.

I took the panel out of the kiln this morning and the yellow and gray I applied is so light you can hardly see it, which is not a bad thing as I was not too cracked up over yesterdays work. the trees came out really nice and are now finished, so it's just his damn head left and then I am done. Hopefully today I will have better luck.

Kev,
You have done an amazing job on this panel.  With each step it becomes more and more alive.  What is the meaning of a "true artist"?  You have taken an idea and then brought it to life, to me, that's what a true artist does!!!!!  Thank you for posting these progress pictures and explaining the process, I'm in awe!

Here is today's progress. This is the last firing. I was finally able to get the look I wanted and am thrilled with it. It is now finished except for the framing.

This pic is a darker than the panel is because a light was behind it so I could see what I was doing while removing the paint.

Thanks Joan! It went better today than I could have hoped for. I knew what I wanted, but was not sure how I was going to achieve that look, so I just dug in and gave it a go. The nice thing about paint is that you can apply it and remove it and start over if it is not to your liking. The last time I worked on the face, I applied paint about 8 times and still did not have the look I was looking for. Today I applied it once and got exactly what I was looking for. I really love the way it came out. It's now finished except for getting it out of the kiln in the morning and framing it in a black painted frame or light box, depending on what they want.

I think we all have days where we work and work and get no where and then the next time everything comes together just as we were visioning.
